Tool · Make PDF Searchable

Turn scans into searchable PDFs.

Drop a scanned PDF or an image (JPG, PNG, WebP) and get back a PDF with a real text layer — copy, search, redact, extract. Tesseract OCR runs entirely in your browser. Pages never leave the tab.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What does making a PDF searchable actually do?
OCR reads the picture of the text on each scanned page and adds an invisible text layer behind the image. The page looks identical, but the words become selectable, searchable and copyable — and tools that work on text, such as search and redaction, start working on that document.
Does the OCR run on a server?
No. The recognition model downloads to your browser once and then runs locally, including offline. Scanned documents are frequently the most sensitive ones a person owns, which is exactly why this one does not go to a cloud service.
Does OCR upload my PDF to a server?
No. The file is opened, processed and saved back by code running in this browser tab — there is no upload endpoint on our servers to send it to. You can watch the Network panel in your browser's developer tools while you work and confirm nothing carrying the document leaves the page.
Is OCR free?
OCR is part of PDFMacro Pro. You can read what it does and open the tool on any plan; running it requires a subscription.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded, every tool keeps working with the network disconnected, because the processing never depended on a server round-trip. AI features that use an on-device model need one download the first time; after that they run offline too.

No account, no upload, no watermark on the way out. Open a file and see for yourself — the network panel is right there if you want to check.
