How it works
Two versions are built and the smaller one is kept: a lossless rebuild of the file, and one where each page is re-rendered as a JPEG at your preset's resolution (text on those pages becomes part of the image). Will compressing make my text blurry?
It depends which version wins. Compress builds a lossless copy and a copy with each page re-rendered as a JPEG at the preset's resolution, and keeps the smaller. In the lossless copy text stays selectable; when the re-rendered copy wins, text becomes part of the page image — choose a higher-quality preset to keep it sharp, and run OCR afterwards if you need to select it. Image-heavy scans usually shrink a lot; a text-only document may barely change.
How small will my file get?
It depends entirely on what is inside it. A scanned document made of page images often drops by most of its size; a PDF that is already mostly text has little to remove, and an honest tool will not pretend otherwise.
Does compression upload my PDF to a server?
No. The file is opened, processed and saved back by code running in this browser tab — there is no upload endpoint on our servers to send it to. You can watch the Network panel in your browser's developer tools while you work and confirm nothing carrying the document leaves the page.
Is Compress free?
Compress is free with a free account: up to 3 downloads a day, and a small PDFMacro line on each page of a saved PDF. Pro removes both. There are no page or file-size caps on either plan.
Does it work offline?
With Pro, yes. Once the page has loaded, every tool keeps working with the network disconnected, because the processing never depended on a server round-trip; OCR's language packs need one download the first time. A free account needs a connection to save, for its daily count. AI features need your AI: your provider online, or your local model running.
